Dealer Set Up of Xootr Swift

Here are the steps required of factory authorized dealers to set up the Xootr Swift as of April 2007.
(This page is formatted to print pretty well on standard paper if you'd like to print it out.)

Unpacking

After opening the Swift box, cut the zip tie holding the seatpost in place. Remove the seatpost and the packing material on it. Next remove the accessories box. Remove the Swift from the box. Cut the remaining zip ties, unfold the Swift, and remove the front wheel from the crank. Remove all packing material. Any small pieces of tape or tape residue left on the Swift should be removed. We use car wax at our facility. Make sure the 2 seat post QR levers are loosened.

Seat Post

For riders from 5' 5" tall to 6" 2" tall, the stock seat post is correct.

For riders shorter than 5' 5", cut 3 inches from the seat post. (Cut the post square with a hacksaw. File the end smooth and square. File a bevel around the cut edge and remove any sharp edges or burrs from the inside edge.)

For riders taller than 6' 2", you may want a longer post. You can buy these on the Xootr website or just request the longer post when you order a bike.

Insert the seat post into the Swift. The post should slide fairly easily up and down. If not, spray a small amount of lubricant, such as WD-40, onto the post and work it up and down a few times to free it up. Tighten both quick-release clamps. To verify that the clamps are tight, release one clamp and check that the seat can not be easily twisted relative to the frame.

Please instruct the owner that the seat post is specifically designed for the Swift and that it is an integral part of the frame structure. Use of a different seat post may result in substantially shortened frame life and will void their frame warranty. Seat posts approved for the Swift are available at Xootr.com. Also point out the minimum insertion point engraved on the post and instruct them that the seat post must be inserted to at least this point.

Headset, Riser, Stem, and Brake Levers

Headset - Verify that the steering action is smooth. If there is a rough spot or resistance, then loosen the headset. If the action is too smooth, then tighten the headset. To either tighten or loosen the heaset use a 36mm headset wrench to loosen the top locking nut. Next tighten or loosen the bottom nut. Once the steering action is correct tighten the top locking nut while holding the bottom nut with a second headset wrench.

Riser - Remove the riser from the accessories box and insert it onto the Swift. The QR lever should face towards the front of the Swift. Tighten the QR clamp on the riser to secure it to the Swift.

Stem - Riders taller than 5' 11" may prefer a longer stem. Riders shorter than 5' 5" may prefer a smaller stem. You can buy either of these on the Xootr website or just request a different stem when you order a bike. Install the stem onto the riser making sure it is centered in relation to the front fork.

Brake Levers - Most riders will prefer that the brake levers be moved in towards the stem about an inch from the standard factory setting. Most will also prefer that the levers are rotated downward to a more nearly vertical orientation.

Front Tire and Tire Pressure.

Insert the front QR skewer into the front wheel and mount the wheel to the Swift. Ensure that the rotation of the wheel is correct. The QR lever may be placed on either side of the fork.

Inflate the tires to 65psi. Instruct the customer on proper tire pressure (65psi for best ride).

Reflectors

Remove the front and rear CPSC reflectors and mounting screws from the accessories box. Install the front reflector to the stem riser. Install the rear reflector on the rear seat stay.

Pedals

Install the pedals. Grease the threads lightly before installation. There is a right and left pedal. The right pedal is a normal thread. The left pedal is a lefthand (backwards) thread.

Derailleur Adjustment

The high/low stops are usually set correctly at the manufacturer. However, you may need to tweak the barrel adjuster on the twist shifter to tune in the cable tension. While turning the pedals put the shifter in Gear 1. Verify that the chain is on the largest cog. Shift the bike to Gear 8. Verify that the chain is on the smallest cog. Shift back to Gear 6, verifying the chain has shifted to the third smallest cog. Now, unscrew the barrel adjuster on the twist shifter until you hear the derailleur start to shift the chain up onto Gear 5. Stop and then reverse the adjuster until the derailleur is silent (about a turn). Verify that the derailleur shifts nicely up and down all 8 gears.

Please instruct the owner about the risk of "throwing the chain" with abrupt shifts into Gear 8 when pedaling fast and lightly.

Brakes

Install the front brake cable. Tuck the loose end of the cable down next to the brake arm.

Balance the brakes if necessary. To nudge a brake pad away from the rim, turn the tension aduster screw on the brake arm clockwise.

Verify that the brake bads are properly centered and aligned with the rim.
