Step 1, Removing the Front Wheel

Remove the bolt from the axle on the front wheel. The bolt is removed by first removing the lock nut using 10mm wrenches. Then the bolt is pulled out of the axle and set aside. Save the bolt, the lock nut, and the two bolt washers. Then, loosen the bolt that runs through the brake pad. You do not need to remove it.

When the brake bolt is loosened, the "blades" (the two flat sides) of the fork will spring open about 5mm. Using both your hands, spread the fork blades apart a little more for a total of about 10mm (3/8 inch). Have a friend help you remove the wheel and axle from the fork. Note: the ends of the axle fit into the holes in the fork blades, so that you must spread the fork blades to be able to remove the axle.

Remove the shim washers and spacer washers from both sides of the axle and set them aside. Slide the axle out of the wheel bearings. You may need to tap the axle lightly with a piece of wood. However, it should not be necessary to pound the axle very hard. Slide the axle into the bearings of the new wheel. Place a shim washer and a spacer washer, as shown in Figure 2, over each end of the axle.

Step 2, Replacing the Front Wheel

Spreading the fork blades with your hands, re-insert the wheel and guide the ends of the axle into the holes in the fork blades. (You may need some help from your friend to do this.) Make sure that the shim washer remains over the larger diameter portion of the axle. Insert the bolt through a bolt washer, through one fork blade, and then through the axle. Place the other bolt washer and the lock nut on the end of the bolt. Tighten the lock nut with the two wrenches. Make sure that the fork blades close up and are in contact with the spacer washers as you tighten the lock nut. Tighten the lock nut to 0.25Nm (50 in-lb)...fairly tight.

Check that the wheel spins freely.
